More Debt, Please?

Victor Davis Hanson, Pajamas Media
1. Please explain this: Barack Obama entered office; nationalized health care; ran up record $1 trillion deficits; promised to hike taxes on the rich; pushed cap and trade through the House; took over large chunks of banks, insurance companies, and auto corporations; made hard-left appointments from Van Jones to Sonia Sotomayor — and in 21 months saw his positives crash from near 70% in January 2009 to little above 40%, with the specter of near record Democratic losses in the Congress just two years after the anti-Bush/anti-Iraq sweep of 2008.

Who's Going to Vote This Year?

Sean Trende, RealClearPolitics
The most difficult job a pollster has is trying to figure out who the actual voters are going to be in a given election year. This is easier said than done, because we know that (a) almost all survey participants say they will vote in the midterm election and (b) historically, only about 40 percent will.Pollsters do their best to solve this problem by screening out those who are unlikely to vote using a question or series of questions probing interest in the election and/or prior voting behavior. These techniques vary widely from pollster to pollster. Some pollsters use especially...

Foreign Policy: The End Of French Diplomacy

When Nicolas Sarkozy selected the prominent socialist and co-founder of Doctors Without Borders, Bernard Kouchner, as foreign minister it was a hopeful experiment in coalition government. But Mira Kamdar of Foreign Policy argues that the experiment has failed miserably, with France's standing at home and on the international stage at an all time low.

U.S. is Fed Up With D.C. Leaders

Cal Thomas & Bob Beckel, USA Today
Bob: In my 30 years in politics I've never seen the voters as angry or impatient as they are today. Sure, Democrats will take a beating in November, but don't assume that represents only anger at them. This is an anti-incumbent movement, and Republicans should be thankful there are so few of them and hence fewer targets. Both parties suffer historically low approval ratings, but in a bad year for Democrats, Republicans are viewed even worse.

Britain Is a Victim of the Austerity Fad

Paul Krugman, New York Times
In the spring of 2010, fiscal austerity became fashionable. I use the term advisedly: the sudden consensus among Very Serious People that everyone must balance budgets now now now wasn’t based on any kind of careful analysis. It was more like a fad, something everyone professed to believe because that was what the in-crowd was saying. Paul Krugman And it’s a fad that has been fading lately, as evidence has accumulated that the lessons of the past remain relevant, that trying to balance budgets in the face of high unemployment and falling...

The New Republic: Democrats Twisting In The Wind

While Republicans stick to message, Democrats are trying to defend their positions of the last two years, and many are not convincing voters. E.J. Dionne of The New Republic argues that this is due in part to a lack of organization on the Democratic side. It is time for Democrats to nationalize the issues of this election, and to stay on a clear and coherent message.

Enthusiasm Gap Remains Awful for Dems

Greg Sargent, Washington Post
The new NBC/Wall Street Journal poll came out this morning, and there's no sugar-coating it: The poll has some very grim results for Democrats. In the 92 most competitive House districts, the GOP's lead among registered voters is 14 points. But what may be even worse are the numbers that show how bad the "enthusiasm gap" remains, with less than two weeks until election day. NBC sends over a partisan breakdown of the two questions designed to measure voter enthusiasm, and the results are striking: The GOP leads Dems by at least 20 points on both of them. The first question...
